Home IoT & Home Automation (Business + Premium Residential)

IoT & Home Automation (Business + Premium Residential)

IoT and automation devices increase convenience — and risk — if they share networks with business systems. SAER designs secure networks for IoT and home automation by segmenting devices, controlling remote access, and ensuring Wi-Fi reliability.

We implement VLAN separation (e.g., IoT vs users vs guests), firewall rules to restrict lateral movement, and secure remote management so clients can monitor and support environments without exposing admin interfaces to the internet.

This work sits directly in the Network & Systems Engineer domain: routing, switching, Wi-Fi design, firewall policy, monitoring, and documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about IoT and home automation networking

Because IoT devices are often the weakest security link. Many smart devices have poor security (default passwords, no firmware updates, unpatched vulnerabilities), and if they're compromised, an attacker on the same network can pivot to business systems, user workstations, or file servers. By placing IoT on a separate VLAN with strict firewall rules, we ensure compromised devices are contained: they can reach the internet (for cloud control) but cannot access your internal network. This is standard practice for any security-conscious deployment and is especially critical in business environments or high-value residential properties.
Yes. Our approach is platform-agnostic: we design the network (VLANs, Wi-Fi SSIDs, firewall policies) to support any IoT ecosystem. Whether you're using Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Control4, Crestron, Lutron, or industrial IoT platforms — the network design accommodates all of them. Each brand's control app or hub connects to the IoT network, and we configure firewall rules to allow necessary cloud communication while blocking lateral movement. This gives you flexibility to choose best-of-breed devices for each use case without being locked into a single vendor's ecosystem.
We implement VPN with MFA for administrative access. This means you (or your automation integrator) connect via encrypted VPN tunnel, authenticate with multi-factor (password + authenticator app or SMS code), and only then gain access to manage IoT devices or network infrastructure. We do NOT expose device management interfaces directly to the internet — a common mistake that leads to compromises. For IoT control apps that require cloud connectivity (Google Home, Alexa, etc.), those use the vendor's secure cloud relay, not direct internet exposure. For local control interfaces (e.g., web panels on AV equipment, smart thermostats), access is restricted to the internal network or VPN only. Everything is documented so authorized personnel know how to connect safely.
